charges. two reputed gang members accused of shooting and killing 15- year-old hadiya pendleton are scheduled to appear in court today for a bond hearing. 18-year-old micheail ward and 20-year-old kenneth williams are charged with hadiya pendleton's murder. police superintendent garry mccarthy says ward has confessed to pulling the trigger and williams is the accused getaway driver. detectives say the motive was revenge for a shooting back in july by a rival gang, in which williams was wounded. mccarthy says police made an arrest in that case, but williams refused to press charges. he says instead, on january 29th, ward and williams mistook hadiya pendleton and her friends for members of that rival gang and shot at them.. killing hadiya and injuring two others. rival gang goes and shoots girls? it was a volleyball team. it was not a rival gang thing. they were cowards. that is what you are. you're a coward. the chicago tribune reports ward was still on the street after he violated probation three times for break-ins and trespassing. in two of those cases the violations were n
year. and last month, 15-year-old hadiya pendleton, who had just performed during president obama's inauguration festivities in washington, was shot dead about a mile from the first family's chicago home. first lady michelle obama attended her funeral last weekend, and the president highlighted her death in his appeal for new gun laws in tuesday's state of the union address. >> hadiya's parents, nate and cleo, are in this chamber tonight, along with more than two dozen americans whose lives have been torn apart by gun violence. they deserve a vote. and the first lady. hadiya pendleton was shot and killed while trying to escape gun fire in a chicago city park several blocks north of the obama family home in the win wood neighborhood. i will go to ted rowlands who is in chicago. i know there's going to be a press conference, you will have a number of officials on this. this is disturbing all around. it's not the first time. chicago has a terrible problem with violence, with gang violence. you have the first lady weighing in at the funeral on saturday. what are they going to do? >> reporter: well, that's a great question, suzanne. and there is in the wake of hadiya pendleton's death, there's a sense of urgency here. as you mentioned, this is not the first time a youngster has been killed in the cross fire with the gang violence on the streets of chicago. but this young woman has really struck a nerve. this was a young 15-year-old girl, who was doing all of the right things. she was a good student going to a great school here in chicago. her parents, great parents, who have encouraged her and her brother to do well in school. she was in the b
of so many people guest: let me mention just a few of them. hadiya pendleton, and understood in an inspiration to our friends, all walking angel her cousin called her. she was taken from us two weeks ago. her family is here today a student at northern illinois university, with a warm heart and bright future, murdered in her classroom by a man with a history of mental illness. her mother is here today. blaire holt killed while shielding his friends from a gang members spraying fire on a city bus. his friend is here today marcus norris, hit in the face by a bullet that came through the wall of his house. thank god he survived. we are glad to have him here today. a true american hero who dedicated his life to serving his country and his community, killed by gang members with a straw purchase gone. i attended his funeral service. the officer's family is here, and his sister will testify today. there are many more in this room today whose lives and families have been changed by gun violence. i would like to ask the friends and family of the victims of gun violence to please stand.
